C. Pre Ground Coffee vs. Freshly Ground
Freshly roasted beans are best for brewing coffee, coffee does expire. When raw coffee beans are roasted, they release carbon dioxide from within the bean. They oxidise after roasting as the outside of the beans is exposed to air.
When you purchase pre-ground coffee off shelf, it’s already stale before you even open it. Grinding coffee beans just before brewing ensures maximum freshness and the best possible flavour from the beans.
For fresh roasted beans that have been grounded, it is good for 1 month when stored in de-gas valve equipped coffee bag.
So always buy fresh whole coffee beans and grind them before brewing. Beans stored in coffee bag with de-gas valve can peak freshness last about two months.
