How Hot Should You Drink Your Coffee? Know the ideal temperature

How Hot Drink Coffee

A. Intro To Hot Coffee Drinking

As the myth goes, scalding coffee is too hot for enjoyable drinking.
The perfect temperature range falls between 68 to 80 degrees Celsius.
But ideal coffee heat depends on more than just numbers.

Proper brewing and serving temperatures are key for highlighting coffee’s nuanced flavours. Too hot or too cold will not obtain peak taste.

B. It’s Not Brewing Temperature

The coffee brewing and serving temperatures are different.

Coffee requires meticulous temperature considerations from brewing to sipping. That hot brew needs proper cooling before it hits your lips.

The key is brewing hot and serving warm – a nuanced dance perfected by coffee experts worldwide.

Proper temps are integral from bean to cup that will unlock coffee’s fullest taste and enjoyment.

C. Temperature For Drinking Specialty Coffee?

For peak flavour, the specialty coffee community often advocates lower serving temperatures than prevailing industry advice (at 85 degrees Celsius). Their more discerning palates understand that excessive heat impairs coffee’s delicate aromas and silky mouthfeel.

Let us explore the ideal temperature needed to unlock specialty coffee’s full sensory potential.

D. Going Even Lower Temperature

While 68 degrees Celsius may seem lukewarm to some, certain aficionados insist even that obscures coffee’s nuance. Experts recommend just 49 to 60 degrees Celsius for optimal sipping.

They argue temperatures exceeding 65 degrees Celsius overwhelm delicate notes, making coffee taste uniformly bitter and harsh. Only around 54 degrees Celsius allows the full sensory spectrum to shine through.

As coffee cools, its density increases relative to water, enriching mouthfeel.
Lower temperatures let you appreciate the slick, velvety texture integral to coffee’s refined character.

So for hardcore connoisseurs, coffee consumed near room temperature maximises sensory experience.
However, such low temps may disappoint those who crave piping hot coffee.

Find your own ideal temperature in the 49 to 68 degrees Celsius range, its all comes down to personal taste priorities.

E. Does Science Have The Answer?

It’s a balancing act. Too cold, and coffee’s lively, vibrant character is dulled. Too hot, and the array of flavours blend into scorched, generic harshness.
The sweet spot is a zone that flatters coffee’s essential taste components.

Let your taste buds discover the perfect temperature that highlights what you most savour in a truly great cup.

F. So What’s The Ideal Temperature To Drink Coffee?

One study aimed to find a balance between flavour and safety, concluding the optimal coffee drinking temperature is around 57.8°C.
However, preferences vary.

Some useful guidelines based on flavour:

  • For rounded, sweet, bitter notes: 68 – 80°C
  • For bright, acidic cups: 49 – 60°C
  • For hot-warm sensation over flavour: 82 – 85°C

Do note that cooled coffee and reheating it can ruin the taste.
There’s no universally agreed upon ideal – only what’s ideal for you.

It’s time for you to brew some Specialty Coffee.
